Saturday, December 12 will mark the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement on Combating Climate Change. WWF made the following statement in response to Carter Roberts, President and CEO: in this episode, host Sarah Ladislaw talks with Archie Young about the future of climate negotiations in light of this year`s postponed COP meetings and the 15th anniversary of the Paris Agreement. Archie and Sarah consider the leadership role of the COP that the United Kingdom is taking this year amid the challenges of Covid 19, the steps that are still being taken to achieve the Paris goals and improve global action, and how diplomatic efforts are working to strengthen and involve all stakeholders. “The fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement is taking place, as we are collectively suffering from a pandemic. People`s sense of security and well-being is being tested like never before. Governments must take this opportunity to show the world that they are capable of protecting us from global threats. Governments must stand in solidarity with those threatened by the interests of fossil fuels and reconcile their plans and commitments at 1.5 degrees Celsius. Greenpeace East Asia, Senior Advisor for Climate, Biodiversity, and Oceans, Li Shuo, said that five years later, the Paris Agreement proved its resilience. It is now up to countries to keep their promise to increase their ambition. Most of them are nowhere near where they should be.
The 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement should remind them of what to do. We have a planet, five years, and countless lives — we have to count this anniversary. Greenpeace Executive Director John Sauven said: “Five years ago, the Paris climate agreement set a path to a safer, healthier and fairer future for all. But the lack of government and business progress means we are still heading for new heat waves, fires, floods and hurricanes. The many disasters of 2020 may seem extraordinary, but they risk becoming a new normal if we do not change direction.
